way from 121 down towards the split. our next stop 66 headed eastbound in virginia. all clear, nice and green. you're moving at speed here through centreville and ending with a glance at 95 headed southbound. near the thornburg area we're getting word of some brush fires taking away some lanes for drivers right before route 3. you're definitely going to want to watch for crews. my advice, avoid this if you can. 95 and thornburg avoid it if you can. >>> hurricane earl is continuing to spin towards the east coast. it's forecast to at least graze north carolina's outer banks or more late thursday but virginia's governor isn't taking any chances. governor bob mcdonnell will declare an emergency later this morning. 9news now's kristin fisher has the latest. >> reporter: well current forecast put the eye of the storm hitting just about 200 miles east of virginia beach but governor bob mcdonnell is not taking any chances. he wants to go ahead and declare an emergency today just in case earl comes closer to making landfall so the national guard and state manual personnel have enough time to

felt, but first bruce leshan is kicking off the coverage live in virginia beach. earlier you were seeing more winds and rain. what are you seeing now. >> still fairly light rain. although i'm getting slapped in the face a little bit and the wind is gusting up to maybe, 15 to 17 miles an hour. you can see the beechcrafts around me blowing good. there are all sorts of signs that say earl doesn't swirl here and so far he is well off the coast. i don't know how familiar you are with the geography but the outer banks stick pretty far east in to the ocean and we recede to the west and earl should remain 150 miles off the coast. look at video we shot a few minutes ago. this is the scene along atlantic avenue and the boardwalk in virginia beach. you can see the wind is blowing pretty good, but not much more than you would get in a decent regular storm, nonhurricane kind of storm in the summer. there are a lot of storm chases who come out. we saw people on the beach at 4:00 in the morning looking for earl and so far not seeing anything that impressed them too much, but there are thousands

front slicing through pennsylvania, west virginia in to parts of virginia. i want to switch it to live doppler 9000 hd because i zoomed in to the area in west virginia an the state line, west of new market, southwest of winchester approaching strasburg, front royal. it is moving to the east. these are light sprinkles, not much rain to talk about. temperature-wise, the clouds and southerly winds have held us in the 70s. cool spot reston at 70. we are at 77. going up to near 90. upper 80s by noon and also for 5:00 look for for sun and some wind. go over to angie goff. >> rev up the engines folks, we are getting geared up for a new hour. one issue out there we are dealing with. a water make main break on 410 where it meets 295. one lane on the right side getting by in both directions. moving to 270, take it outside. it is a problem free commute past father hurley to the split. as we move to virginia, 495 in virginia from the wilson bridge to 95 up to 66 looks like drivers are moving at speed. the same situation for those of you traveling 395. no incidents or accidents along the

of their homes. it happened last night in manassas, virginia. this fire spread quickly between close-together homes in the 8300 block of tillotts loop. kristin fisher is joining us with more. >> the fire is out but the families are feeling the affects of this massive fire. three homes were destroyed t. eight more damaged. and the families that were living inside are being housed by the red cross. started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. that's this when the fire broke out. neighbors heard a loud bang and saw two houses engulfed in flames an then the flames spread to eight houses total. neighbors said it looked like dominoes falling. the flames were so powerful it carried embers 350-yards away. the plumes of smoke so thick and heavy that many driving to manassas after work thought that a plane had crashed nearby. >> i saw five plumes separate. and i thought, man i hope -- i know the airport is there and everything. we have great security here. >> reporter: incredibly no one was inside the homes when the fire broke out. a few people did go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but for

in virginia, everything is okay here between both loops as you make your way between 95 past annandale to 66 continuing to the american legion. in maryland the outer loop is checking out in good shape from 95 over to 270 and back to the maps, we want to tell you about in the district we have a fire going on. the situation with crews on the scene responding happened early this morning. here are the live conditions and looks like the road is blocked off at 16th street and northwest. closed between somerset place and tuckerman street. back to you. we start with breaking news. just over an hour ago, firefighters rushed to the scene where eight people were injured in an apartment fire. 9 news now reporter lindsey mastis live from northwest washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. that's right. eight people were injured and taken to the hospital. two people are in critical condition. the firefighters say there's another three dozen people that may need to be transported to the hospital. they say the fire started in a common area on the fifth floor. i talked to one wit

frederick county, maryland down to parts of northern virginia. on live doppler 9000 hd, i have zoomed in to loudoun, northern prince william counties. you can see it there. west of fairfax county. i need doppler, please, control room. you can see on route 50, 6:59, out of 234, if you keep going north, west of dulles and heavy rain. these are torrential downpours and they are out to upperville. northern faulkier in to loudoun right now, maybe eastern frederick, virginia seeing the heaviest of the rain. we will continue to watch that. the temperatures this morning in this tropical air mass are in the upper 60s to low 70s and with a good jumping point i think it will be a warm afternoon. especially since we will get sunshine out here. mid-70s by 9:00. showers an but as we head to the middle of the day and this afternoon, more sunshine, breezy and warm, upper 70s to maybe even 85 for a high. we'll talk about more rain coming by thursday. it is 5:01 and that means it is time for traffic. >> thank you, howard. good morning, everybody. overall not a bad start to our tuesday morning co

, virginia over a traffic speed bump led to murder. the body of steven cay was found at his home on field master drive on sunday night. police arrested and charged his neighbor, 44-year-old david patton with murder. they say he stormed in to carr's home and tied up him and his girlfriend before shooting carr. they say he may have been mad at the addition of a street bump. residents were shocked. >> i can't get over the fact it is senseless. >> it is senseless. ridiculous and so sad. >> reporter: in june, dave patton was arrested for assaulting steven carr outside of his home. his court date for that charge was set for thursday. he is now charged with second- degree murder and is in fairfax jail without bond. >>> police in florida are trying to solve the murder of a businessman from alexandria, virginia. sam dell broco was the founder of pci communication. he traveled several times a month to a home in pomp know beach where deputies found miss body inside of the home which is in a gated community. police have not said how he was killed ever an armored car guard is expected to recover after
